Skidegate Pole Post and Beam

Fundraising

Fundraising to build a monumental 53,000 square foot, multi-complex Haida Heritage Centre at Qay'llnagaay has taken considerable time and effort by Skidegate Band Council and their appointed Qay'llnagaay Heritage Centre Society board members.

Community members - in Skidegate and from surrounding communities - have dedicated their time and effort to provide invaluable input to the Heritage Centre design and planning.

Successful fundraising initiatives have resulted in major contributions from:

  • the Province of BC - June 13, 2006: $4 million in support of cultural preservation, tourism, and sustainable employment.
  • Indian and Northern Affairs Canada / Dept. of Indian & Northern Affairs (INAC/DIAND) - 2001: $4 million in partnership with Parks Canada
  • Parks Canada - $6 million commitment for design, construction and Exhibitory.
  • Western Economic Diversification Canada (WEDC) - Softwood Industry Community Economic Adjustment Initiative (SICEAI) - $1.1 million
  • Heritage Canada, Canadian Heritage - $1.5 million
  • Gwaii Trust Society, Haida Gwaii - $2 million
  • Various contributions from Heritage Canada, Museum Assistance Program; Vancouver Foundation; and Skeena Native Development Society (SNDS) $250,000 sawyer training dollars to create the monumental cedar beams and columns.
